About the Embassy

The Uganda Embassy in Bujumbura is charged with the mandate of promoting and protecting Uganda’s national interests in Burundi, and the wider East Africa and the Great Lakes Region, with emphasis on areas such as promotion of trade, investment, tourism and education, regional peace and integration under the framework of the East African Community, as well as provision of protocol and consular services, and protection of the Ugandan Diaspora.

The Embassy was officially opened in August 2009. The initial Chancery was housed in the Whitestone Building in Bujumbura. Since then, relations between Uganda and Burundi have acquired a new dynamism and the mission ensures that these relations are upheld and strengthened.

In January 2021 the Chancery relocated to Plot 8467/C in Kiyange - Buterere. Official opening of the Chancery occurred on 21st March 2022.

Mission: To Promote and protect Uganda’s interests in the Republic of Burundi, enhance the integration of East Africa and attain peace, stability and development of the Great Lakes Region

Key Functions:

  1. To promote Uganda’s economic and commercial interests in the Republic of Burundi.
  2. To promote regional peace and security.
  3. To promote regional integration.
  4. To enhance the participation of the Diaspora in national development.
  5. To strengthen the provision of diplomatic, protocol and consular services.
  6. To promote Uganda’s image in Burundi through Public Diplomacy.
  7. To enhance the institutional capacity of the Mission.
